The analysis of regional economic effect by net migration by age cohort
Park, Seungkyu · Chang, Insu
The demographic change that a region faces does not simply result in a change in the number of people through a change in population, but also spreads throughout the local economy. Therefore, the purpose of the study is to analyze the overall process by using regional econometric input-output model that is ultimately linked to regional economic change by considering net migration due to environmental change, and population, employment, consumption, and government expenditure due to net migration. In order to understand these regional economic changes more clearly, the regional economic changes due to demographic change were identified in Jeju Island, where the population increased, net migration occurred, and relative stabilization of employment and increase in consumption occurred among all cities and provinces.
As a result of analyzing regional economic changes caused by the increase in net migration, which means the increase in the social population, it was found that the increase in net migration has a direct effect on increasing the population in their 10s and 20s, 40s and 50s, and the population over 70 years old. In addition, 1% increase in the net migration increases 0.002% to 0.003% of the total population, 1.174% to 1.463% of consumption, 0.078% to 0.082% of employment, 0.444% to 0.449% of government expenditure, 1.074% to 1.329. And finally it was linked to an increase in output, which ultimately resulted in an increase in the gross regional domestic product by 1.630% to 2.017%. Therefore, the 1% increase in the net migration through the increase in immigration was found to act as a major driver of regional growth, also it was analyzed that it was linked with consumption and production of the region except simple role of population to lead the growth of the region.
